Esimerkiksi Kenian turismisektori saattaa menettää yli 100 000 työpaikkaa, virallinen sektori jopa 500 000 työpaikkaa tämän vuoden ensimmäisen puolikkaan aikana. Kaikkiaan taloudellisen menetyksen hinnaksi on arvioitu jopa 260 miljardia Kenian shillinkiä eli 3,6 miljardia Yhdysvaltain dollaria.

After much speculation, the deputy leader of Uganda's Lord's Resistance Army, Vincent Otti, is confirmed dead. Observers maintain that Otti's absence will pose a serious obstacle to peace talks launched Monday between the rebel groups and the Ugandan government.

With government-opposition talks organised by former UN secretary-general Kofi Annan due to take place in Kenya today, an MP of the Orange Democratic Movement was shot dead and two Kenyan military helicopters opened fired above a crowd threatening members of the Luo tribe sheltering at a police post.

Continuano le violenze a Nakuru, capoluogo della Rift Valley dove le autorità keniane hanno imposto il coprifuoco notturno: l’agenzia Misna riporta che giovani armati appartenenti alla comunità kalenjin, che ha sostenuto il candidato sconfitto Odinga, verrebbero pagati 5000 scellini (circa 50 euro) per l’uccisione di un kikuyu, l’etnia di Kibaki. Proprio dalla zona di Nakuru ci giunge la drammatica testimonianza telefonica di don Gabriele Pipinato, direttore del Centro Saint Martin. “E la polizia? Cosa fa la polizia?” – “Sta aiutando i civili a lasciare le aree più calde per recarsi verso la Rift Valley per trovare rifugio. La situazione è per loro fuori controllo. Non fa che sparare in aria senza risultato. Da due giorni scontri e violenze tra gruppi armati di kalenjin e kikuyu hanno messo a ferro e fuoco villaggi interi. Le città di Rongai e il villaggio di Kiambogo sono stati attaccati con molte case date alle fiamme. Giovani disperati ed armati di machete e pistole distruggono ed uccidono”. (di Fabio Pipinato)
