Zimbabwen ammatillisen keskusjärjestön ZCTU:n johto toipuu parhaillaan sairaalassa vammoista, joita se sai poliisin pidätysselleissä 13. syyskuuta tehtyjen joukkopidätysten yhteydessä.

Sambian vaalit, jotka on määrä pitää 28. syyskuuta, lähestyvät. Vaalit ovat maan neljännet monipuoluevaalit vuoden 1991 jälkeen, jolloin maassa 27 vuotta jatkunut yhden puolueen valta päättyi. Politiikan analyytikot uskovat, että maan istuva presidentti Levy Mwanawasa tulee taistelemaan tiukasti vaalivoitosta, joka veisi hänet toiselle ja viimeiselle kaudelle.

Political analysts believe the country's fourth multiparty poll since it emerged from 27 years of one-party rule in 1991 will be a hard-fought contest for the incumbent, President Levy Mwanawasa of the Movement for Multi-Party Democracy (MMD), who is seeking a second and final term of office.
