17.03.2006 L’organizzazione internazionale di soccorso medico Medici Senza Frontiere (MSF) lancia una grande campagna di vaccinazione contro il morbillo a Mbuji Mayi (nella provincia del Kasai Orientale), la seconda città più grande della Repubblica Democratica del Congo (RDC). In poche settimane MSF vaccinerà 550.000 bambini sotto i 5 anni. A gennaio, un’epidemia di morbillo era stata segnalata a Mbuji Mayi, dove vivono circa due milioni e mezzo di persone. Dall’inizio dell’anno sono stati identificati oltre 1.000 nuovi casi.

04.03.2006 La Banca Mondiale (BM) si rifiuta di rendere pubblici i risultati dell’inchiesta che ha avviato sui saccheggi del settore minerario nella Repubblica Democratica del Congo. Ma al contempo il suo Presidente, Paul Wolfowitz, è intervenuto personalmente per rinviare la cancellazione del debito dell'ex-Zaire nonostante sia il Board che il management della Banca e del Fmi avessero dato il loro benestare. La decisione di Wolfowitz ha indispettito non poco i vertici delle due istituzioni di Bretton Woods: tutta la documentazione prodotta lasciava intendere che la Repubblica Democratica del Congo avesse imboccato il binario giusto per il ripristino della pace e della sicurezza all’interno dei suoi confini e stesse anche ritrovando una certa solidità economica e finanziaria. Adesso il Paese africano dovrà sottostare a tutta una serie di nuove condizionalità continuando a pagare il salatissimo conto del debito.
