29.08.2006 Researchers say that planting trees in dry regions of the world could make better use of scarce water resources increasingly threatened by climate change. They warn, however, that although planting the right species in the right areas could improve water efficiency, other species could make the problem much worse.

24.08.2006 Representatives of five environmentalist organizations, “Krste Jon", „Areal", „Enhalon" and „Green Centre" from Struga, together with the Macedonian Green Centre from Skopje, addressed the President, Government and the Parliament of the Republic of Macedonia in an open letter, to express their concern over the activities that the local authorities in the city of Struga have undertaken along the coastline of the Ohrid Lake, directly endangering the coastal zone.

The last date for submitting applications is 15 October 2006.

As awareness about this environmental hazard spreads, the desertification process itself has gathered dangerous momentum. In a report by Lester Brown, President of the Earth Policy Institute, countries all over the world are rapidly losing the battle against desertification.

22.08.2006 The country’s highest court says that the Indian government has a duty to protect natural waterbodies to ensure its citizens their fundamental right to a decent quality of life.Besides, the state also has a duty to protect the environment.

01.08.2006 Alla Provincia autonoma di Trento una "bandiera nera" per la scarsa attenzione verso la conservazione della natura e la mancanza di una politica per lo sviluppo delle aree protette. Ed una anche a quella di Bolzano, la cui disinvoltura nell’applicazione delle disposizioni di tutela ambientale espone ad un forte rischio le fonti termali di Brennero: sono alcune delle 13 "bandiere nere" assegnate ieri dalla Carovana delle Alpi di Legambiente. La Carovana dedica al Trentino Alto Adige anche diverse "bandiere verdi" tra cui spiccano quelle all’Associazione Trentino Arcobaleno per l’attivismo con cui vengono promosse le attività di agricoltura biologica, di turismo dolce, di consumo critico. E all’Amministrazione Provinciale di Trento per avere intrapreso una iniziativa legislativa contro le speculazioni urbanistiche delle seconde case. Una bandiera verde ai sindaci dei Comuni della Val Susa (TO) "per la loro capacità di governare, in modo pacifico e responsabile, un fenomeno di straordinaria mobilitazione di una intera comunità, facendone una originale palestra di democrazia e partecipazione".

01.08.2006 Professor Raman Sukumar, chairman of the Centre for Ecological Sciences, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore - who is also known as India's elephant man - has been awarded the 2006 International Cosmos Prize in recognition of his research and academic achievements in the fields of ecology and conservation biology in the Western Ghats.
