25.08.2006 Professor Asit K. Biswas, a tireless water proponent who constantly challenges the "status quo", received the 2006 Stockholm Water Prize Laureate from Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden. Professor Biswas is an Indian-born Canadian citizen and president of the Mexico City-based Third World Centre for Water Management.

24.08.2006 Representatives of five environmentalist organizations, “Krste Jon", „Areal", „Enhalon" and „Green Centre" from Struga, together with the Macedonian Green Centre from Skopje, addressed the President, Government and the Parliament of the Republic of Macedonia in an open letter, to express their concern over the activities that the local authorities in the city of Struga have undertaken along the coastline of the Ohrid Lake, directly endangering the coastal zone.

As awareness about this environmental hazard spreads, the desertification process itself has gathered dangerous momentum. In a report by Lester Brown, President of the Earth Policy Institute, countries all over the world are rapidly losing the battle against desertification.

Kadulla nähtiin noin 150 ihmistä, musiikkia, tanssia, capoeiraa, jonglöörausta ja järjestöpöytiä. Jo neljättätoista kertaa ajettu neppisralli saavutti jälleen suuren suosion.

14.08.2006 In Cina si espande il deserto settentrionale e sono sempre più violente le tempeste di polvere sollevate dai venti siberiani, che spazzano l’intera Asia settentrionale. In Cina 1,74 milioni di kmq sono già deserti o desertificati: il deserto copre circa il 18% dell’intera Nazione e un altro 4% è in via di desertificazione. Secondo l’Onu, 400 milioni di cinesi vivono in terre minacciate dalla desertificazione. Mentre avanzano i deserti nord occidentali e l’intera Asia settentrionale è colpita dalle tempeste di polvere, nella Mongolia Interna, esperti italiani e cinesi lanciano un innovativo metodo di riforestazione che permette di fermare il deserto - riporta Asianews. "La desertificazione è un problema globale che affligge un quinto della popolazione mondiale in più di 100 paesi” - aveva ricordato il Segretario generale dell'Onu Kofi Annan, nel messaggio diffuso in occasione della “Giornata mondiale per la lotta alla desertificazione e alla siccità”, che si è celebrata lo scorso 17 giugno. Il 2006 è stato proclamato dall'Onu “Anno Internazionale dei Deserti e della Desertificazione”.
